So…

As summer is here now, the gyms are becoming full with the seasonal trainers who want to look good for summer. Don’t get me wrong, this is great for me and my business as it leads to an increased workload for me, but this is BAD NEWS for when I am training. I try and encourage anybody of any level to start training as it’s something I am very passionate about, from young guys to retired women, the gym is a place for every one to use. Unfortunately though, people don’t quite grasp the whole gym concept and see it as a social event more than anything else. Here are my top 5 pet hates in the gym throughout the summer:

#1 – Gym Attire

I believe that we should all wear appropriate clothing for the gym. No, I am not saying we all have to dress up in the latest sportswear and have the newest trainers, but it needs to be appropriate. What I am seeing these days is people training in flat peak caps, baggy trousers that look like they are wearing nappies, vests that are cut down to the belly button and so on so forth. Footwear includes TOMS and other sandshoes that really don’t need to be seen in a gym. These are the types of things you would expect to see people on a night out in the town wearing not people training in a sweaty gym.

#2 – Training in groups of more than 3

Again, this comes back to the social side of the gym in which people (normally youths, but some adults) train in large groups and think its okay to hog a machine all night. The other night I asked a group of lads (must have been 16 ish) how long they would be using the smith machine… There response to me was “well we have got 2 sets left each, then where doing incline and then some decline”.. Barring in mind there was 5 of them, meant they had around 40 sets to do on the machine. Now what bugs me even more was, they were talking in between sets. One on, one off would still have been bad but to take up a machine with 5 of you and talk to each other in between sets really does take the P**S.

Advice: Train in lower groups or hurry up!!!

#3 – Leaving weights out

This happens all year round, but I notice it more when the gym is full. If your big enough and strong enough to lift the weight.. PUT IT BACK! Why do people think it’s up to others to tidy up there equipment after use!?

#4 – The weekend trainers

The gym is noticeably a lot fuller these days on a Friday night and Saturday afternoon. It’s always the same guys in training, and they always train the same body parts, Chest Friday and Arms Saturday before they go out on the town. Bodybuilding is a lot about vanity but if these guys put even half the effort they do training chest and arms into training legs, some of them would have a pretty decent physique. But it is always the same, and always will be: Big upper body, no lower body!

#5 – The older generation that think they own EVERYTHING!!

I am sorry, but this has to be said… Why are old people so RUDE!? They think they can do what they want, where they want and with what they want because they fought in the world war. Look, I am sorry mate, but you can get stuffed. This doesn’t involve all old people, and some are very nice people but for the ones that aren’t... Go bird watching or something.
