Q&A with Dave Young - Round 1

What's the best protein powder?

This is a very frequent question I get asked about and I believe that there are many different proteins which can be determined as 'the best' protein powder, depending on the time of the day. I believe that there is not one protein which can be determined as the best but here are my pick of protein powders and the best time to use them.

Pre/post workout - Whey Isolate

A whey isolate is the best protein to use around training times because it is the fastest acting of all the proteins. It will provide the muscle with amino acids at a faster rate which is ideal for recovery. The quicker we can get protein to the muscle the better.

Anytime Protein - Blended Protein

I believe the best protein to use at any point of the day barring the other 2 times noted is a blend. I find that we can maintain steady amino acid profiles over a constant period meaning that we will get a steady supply of protein throughout the hours immediately after taking it.

Evening (before bed) - Casein

This is the slowest acting of proteins and can be used whilst sleeping to slowly trickle protein to the muscle. It is important to take a slow acting protein whilst asleep because we are not supplying any nutrients to the muscle throughout sleep.

Does creatine help me put weight on? Whats the best creatine?

Creatine typically does not aid in gaining weight or muscle but is certainly a by product of using it. Creatine is used for strength and endurance and by helping the muscle lift heavier for longer we can put more stress on the muscle meaning, providing your nutrition is correct, growth of muscle tissue. I have found for strength and power gains typically we need 10-20g creatine and I prefer to use 2 sources; micronized creatine monohydrate and creatine ethyl ester. Monohydrate is fast acting where as the ethyl ester provides sustained release because of the ester attached.

My arms are lacking in size, how can I bring these up?

To be fair, any weak bodyparts are normally down to genetics and more often than not very difficult to bring up. The best advice I can give is drop the rooe pushdowns and cable curls and swap out for compound movements. In order to grow compounds are a must. Also, sometimes less is more. Make sure you are giving your muscle adequate time to recover before hitting it again. Example arms workout:

Tricep Dips 3x8
Tricep close grip bench press 3x8
Tricep EZ bar extension 3x12

Barbell Olympic bar curls 3x8
Dbell hammer curls 3x10 (each arm)
Preacher curls 3x8

How many grams of carbs should I be on?

So this is a very frequent question in which all I can reply is "how longs a piece of string?". Unfortunately there is no right or wrong answer to this and its about finding out for yourself how many you need. I would recommend that you start on an amount, for instance 100g. Each 7 days, weigh yourself and see if the scales are moving. If they arent and your aiming to add weight then increase by small amounts until you start to add 0.5-1lb a week. Do the opposite if trying to lose weight. If you put anything more than 1lb in that week you would need to decrease the amount again by small increments until you get to the desired weight loss/gain target.
