Casein protein, micellar casein and milk protein is the single best protein source when sustained release of proteins is essential. Usually casein proteins are best taken at night but they can be used at any time that sustained protein release is essential such as when there is likely to be a big gap until your next meal.
Studies have shown that while whey protein induces a much more rapid rise in blood amino acid levels, casein protein, by virtue of its delayed release will slowly release amino acids over a longer period of time inhibiting muscle breakdown to a greater extent than whey.
That does not mean casein is superior to whey, but rather that when you need proteins to your muscles fast, such as pre and post-workout, whey is superior but for times when sustained release is important casein will do a better job.
